Monitor remote servers is a task that takes time, ability and the right tools. To monitor daily number of corporate servers that administer, I recently discovered two practical tools that are accessed via web interface (and therefore very comfortable): it is phpSysInfo and munin.
As the name suggests, phpSysInfo the alkaline su PHP (and then force you to use apache-prefork instead of the more powerful apache-mdm-worker). The phpsysinfo interface is very simple and summary, presenting the main information system (CPU, RAM used, employment of various file-system) screen in a clean and tidy.
munin is more complex, but also more powerful: is presented as a series of graphs that represent the behavior of all major system components and system sizes (number of active processes, % processes of active and sleeping, etc.). Each quantity is represented on a graph on a daily and weekly chart. Munin is written in Perl, and is certainly more detailed and thorough. In addition, you can extend the functionality thanks to munin plugin.
In case of problems, but, is not possible to use either interface presented here: We will therefore resort to a tool “active” (come ssh, vnc, o Teamviewer) to make the changes necessary.
munin phpsysinfo and are available for all Linux distributions.
